Time for Leaflets, But Not for Action?
1st September 2025
Romiley residents have been voicing growing frustration with their local Liberal Democrat councillors, who appear to have plenty of time for photo opportunities and leaflet drops – but little time to address the issues that matter most to the community.
This summer, campaign material featuring Romiley’s Lib Dem team has been pushed through doors across the ward. Smiling councillors pose for photos and point at things, but residents are asking: where is the action when it comes to protecting our local environment?
The destruction of the Padden Brook Local Wildlife Site has left many in Romiley dismayed. Once a cherished green space, home to a wide range of plants and animals, its loss is a stark reminder of what can happen when urgent local issues are not prioritised. Despite repeated concerns raised by the community, residents say they have seen little meaningful intervention from their elected representatives.
“We don’t need more leaflets through the door telling us how hard they’re working. We need them to actually do something about the destruction of our natural spaces,” one local resident told the Gazette.
Campaigning and visibility are part of politics – but residents are questioning whether the balance has tipped too far towards publicity at the expense of real outcomes.
For now, the glossy leaflets keep arriving. But unless the councillors can show concrete progress on issues like Padden Brook, many locals feel the words “community champions” will ring hollow.
