Here in Romiley, residents are becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of visible community involvement from the Liberal Democrats — something the situation at Padden Brook has made painfully clear.

For 14 months locals have raised concerns about destruction and safety around the W1 protected woodland site at Padden Brook, yet meaningful engagement or leadership from the Lib Dem representatives has been noticeably absent. The absence of coordinated political support has left many feeling disconnected and disheartened.

The issue is emblematic of a wider problem within the party nationally. LibDem membership has halved in the past five years — a signal that something fundamental is missing. They cannot rebuild a party by campaigning from a distance. Engagement must start at the grassroots level, with genuine listening, collaboration, and shared ownership of local challenges.

Romiley deserves more than seasonal appearances, photo ops and generic newsletters. Communities like ours thrive when people feel part of the conversation — when their ideas and energy are welcomed, not just their votes. Rebuilding that sense of purpose and belonging means showing up consistently, not only at election time.

If the Liberal Democrats are serious about renewal, they must begin right here in places like Romiley, where the gaps between political rhetoric and real-world involvement are most visible. Padden Brook isn’t just a local environmental issue — it’s a test of whether we can reconnect politics to the people it’s meant to serve.
