Hazel Grove’s new MP, Lisa Smart, has been drawn into questions about whether she played any part in the Liberal Democrats’ ongoing internal controversy over rule changes concerning gender quotas.

The row within the party erupted after members approved a change defining “women” for internal elections as those whose sex at birth was female — a move criticised by the party’s LGBT+ group as “explicitly trans-exclusionary”. The decision followed a legal settlement earlier this year with a gender-critical campaigner who claimed discrimination by the party.

While some observers have speculated about the influence of senior Lib Dem figures, there is no public evidence that Ms Smart, who was appointed Home Affairs spokesperson in September and later moved to the Cabinet Office brief, had any direct involvement in the policy change.

A party source told the Gazette that frontbench spokespeople “may have been aware of discussions but were not the architects of the motion.”

Political analysts suggest her role is more administrative than strategic within party governance. “She’s on the frontbench but not in the rule-making core,” said one commentator. “Unless she sits on the Federal Board or Conference Committee, she wouldn’t have had a decisive hand in this.”

As the Lib Dem leadership faces renewed pressure to clarify its stance on inclusion, local members say they hope the controversy won’t overshadow the party’s recovery in the North West — or Ms Smart’s efforts to establish herself as a hardworking constituency MP.
