A Romiley resident has called on Stockport Council Leader Councillor Mark Roberts (Liberal Democrat) to publicly withdraw and apologise for comments she says were “defamatory and unfounded.”
According to witnesses, an incident occurred recently in Romiley precinct, where Councillor Roberts allegedly referred to the resident as “toxic” in a loud and aggressive manner, prompting her husband to intervene. The resident says this is not the first time such language has been used by the council leader, claiming that similar remarks were made previously in response to a public question at a council meeting.
“I have repeatedly asked Councillor Roberts to substantiate those comments,” she said. “To date, he has provided no evidence for them. I believe the people of Stockport deserve better conduct from those in positions of public trust.”
The resident has now issued a formal letter before legal action, requesting that Councillor Roberts either provide evidence supporting his statements or issue a full public apology.
A spokesperson for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology recently confirmed in an unrelated matter that public officials must uphold principles of accountability and fairness, something the resident believes should apply equally to local representatives.
When approached for comment, Councillor Roberts had not responded at the time of publication
The resident maintains she will pursue all available remedies if the remarks are not withdrawn, saying she is “determined to uphold her reputation and ensure that public debate in Stockport remains civil and factual.”
