MARPLE — Sometimes it feels like politics is a fast-track game. Just months after being elected, Michaela Meikle has gone from newcomer to one of Stockport Council’s most powerful figures — with a multi-million-pound portfolio in her hands.

Meikle, first elected in May 2024 to represent Marple North, now holds the Cabinet portfolio for Economy, Regeneration & Skills. That means she has a major say over the £20 million Levelling Up Fund set aside for Marple — money earmarked for the town’s regeneration, community hubs, and infrastructure improvements.

The jewel in the crown? The Marple Active Communities Hub. Plans include demolishing the old swimming pool and library, reshaping town centre roads, and building a modern, multi-use facility. The council has already released £2 million to get the project to the next stage, with the rest of the £20 million set to follow.

But here’s the kicker: there’s almost no publicly known work history for Meikle. Her profile highlights her local roots, schooling, and community involvement, but nothing concrete about professional experience or previous leadership roles. In other words, she’s a newcomer stepping straight into a role that would make even seasoned councillors sit up and take notice.

. “It’s a lot of responsibility for someone so new,” said one local. “Twenty million pounds is no small change — I hope there’s enough oversight.”

Council leaders would claim Meikle is supported by experienced officers, including Paul Richards, Deputy Chief Executive for Development & Regeneration, and that major decisions are taken in consultation with the full Cabinet. Still, in a place like Marple — sometimes seen as one of the wealthier corners of Stockport — questions about priorities, spending, and transparency are never far from the surface.

For a newcomer to wield so much power so quickly, the eyes of the community will be watching every step. After all, when £20 million is on the line, there’s no room for mistakes — or for too much inexperience.
