Dear Emma Curle

Not a FOIA/EIR, just a planning question.

I am writing to request clarification regarding the recent removal of three ash trees within the W1-designated woodland at Padden Brook, SK6

Given the recognised ecological value of W1 woodland, I would be grateful if you could outline the reasons full tree removal was considered necessary, rather than alternative measures such as selective pruning or crown management. This is of particular interest as the trees appear to have been previously retained despite encroachment on nearby public infrastructure, including street lighting.

I would appreciate clarification on the following points:

  • Whether options such as pruning, crown reduction, or other tree management measures were formally assessed, and if so, why they were deemed unsuitable
  • The specific objectives or requirements that the tree removal was intended to address
  • Whether the decision was based primarily on arboricultural condition, ecological considerations, or other site-related factors

If available, I would also be grateful if you could direct me to the relevant Arboricultural Impact Assessment, ecological appraisal, and the sections of the officer’s report that explain and justify this decision.

Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

Sheila Oliver

Were the ash trees removed to allow bulldozer access onto this W1 woodland/protected visual amenity land in order to build housing? Is that why permission is likely to be given to this gate on a blind bend always full of parked cars? Given Stockport Council’s colourful planning history documented on this site, that is a possibility.
