People have been left stunned after a police chief claimed there was a “missed opportunity” to arrest a leading Premier League figure accused of sexual attacks.

The unnamed football personality – a household name in England’s top flight – was accused of raping a minor. According to a newly released internal review, detectives should have arrested him and searched his property for evidence, particularly as the alleged victim believed she had been recorded.

Instead, the man was simply invited into a police station for a voluntary interview. No warrant was issued, and no search took place.

The detective superintendent who reviewed the case has now criticised that decision, stating bluntly that key opportunities to gather evidence were lost.

“There was a missed opportunity within this investigation,” the report concluded. “He should have been arrested and his property searched to support the investigation. This did not happen.”

The accused man has denied all allegations, and legal restrictions mean he cannot currently be named.

People are calling for answers on how such a high-profile case could be handled in this way.
