Romiley residents are being urged to make their voices heard as Stockport Council prepares to launch a crucial consultation on the borough’s future development.
Following consultation with the Chair, Cabinet has agreed to hold an extraordinary meeting at 6.00 pm on Monday, 27 October 2025 in Committee Room 2 at Stockport Town Hall to consider the next stage of the borough’s Local Plan.
This stage, known as the Regulation 18 Consultation, marks the first formal opportunity for the public to shape the proposals that will guide how land is used across Stockport over the next 15 years. It will cover everything from housing and jobs to transport, town centres, and crucially, the future of local green spaces.
Campaigners warn that unless residents speak up, treasured green areas in Romiley and the wider Stockport area could be at risk of development pressure. The consultation provides a chance for local people to highlight the importance of parks, playing fields, and green belt land in maintaining quality of life, tackling climate change, and supporting wildlife.
A local community spokesperson said:
“This is a once-in-a-generation chance for Romiley residents to shape the future of our area. If we don’t respond, we risk losing the green spaces that make our neighbourhoods special. Everyone who cares about protecting our countryside, our children’s play areas, and the green lungs of our towns needs to take part.”
The Cabinet meeting on 27 October will decide the final wording of the consultation before it goes out to the public later this autumn. Once open, residents will be able to submit their views online, in writing, or at drop-in events across the borough.
Romiley groups are already preparing to mobilise, encouraging neighbours to share their views and stress the importance of protecting green spaces for future generations.
How to Get Involved:
- Look out for Stockport Council’s official Local Plan consultation launch following the 27 October meeting.
- Respond to the consultation, making clear your views on the importance of protecting green space.
- Spread the word—encourage friends, family, and neighbours to take part.
This is the community’s chance to stand up for Romiley’s environment and ensure future development does not come at the cost of the green spaces we all value.

As with all SMBC consultations, there will be tick-boxes guiding you to give the response they will have already decided on. There will be comments boxes, but comments will be ignored by the Council. As with the bypass – it was:- Do you want the pretty bypass to go this way or that way?
This looks very important – time to join forces
