Residents in Romiley are raising concerns over a derelict catering trailer that has remained on protected woodland and visual amenity land for more than 18 months.
The rusting “butty van”, positioned on land designated as W1 woodland/visual amenity space, has become an increasing source of frustration for neighbours who say repeated requests to have it removed have gone unanswered.
Photographs taken over the past year show the deteriorating condition of the trailer, including visible corrosion, damaged panels and ground disturbance around the site. Temporary fencing and earthworks have also altered the appearance of the previously green verge area.
Local residents say they have contacted Stockport Council on multiple occasions to report concerns about:
- Possible unauthorised siting of a structure on protected land
- Impact on the visual amenity of the area
- Ground disturbance to woodland/green space
- The precedent it may set for further encroachment
One resident told the Gazette:
“This is designated woodland and visual amenity land. It’s meant to be protected. Yet this structure has been left there for over 18 months. We’ve reported it repeatedly and nothing appears to have happened.”
Under planning legislation, the siting of structures and material changes of use can require planning permission, particularly on protected land. Enforcement responsibility sits within the Council’s planning service.
The senior officer responsible for planning services, including enforcement, is Emma Curle, Assistant Director for Place Making and Planning at Stockport Council. Residents say they are now seeking clarification from senior leadership about what action, if any, is being taken.
Stockport Council has previously stated that planning enforcement is discretionary and investigations are carried out where a breach of planning control is suspected.
Residents are calling for:
- A formal investigation into whether planning permission has been granted
- Clear communication from the Council on enforcement action
- Restoration of the woodland/amenity land if breaches are identified
The Romiley Gazette has contacted Stockport Council for comment.
