A treasured W1 protected woodland in Romiley, largely untouched since the 1960s, has reportedly suffered illegal modification, raising serious concerns among local residents and conservation advocates. The site, long regarded as a haven for wildlife and an important part of the community’s natural heritage, is now at risk.

Efforts to obtain information and accountability have reportedly been met with obstruction. Queries to the Monitoring Officer, Arboculture Officer, Information Governance Officer, and Complaints Officer have yet to produce clear responses, frustrating those who seek to protect the area.

Local councillors and the area’s Member of Parliament have been made aware of the situation. Community members are urging them to take immediate action to investigate the reported damage, ensure proper restoration, and put measures in place to prevent further harm.

“This site has been preserved for over half a century and represents a unique part of Romiley’s natural heritage,” said one resident. “The lack of transparency from authorities is deeply concerning, and decisive action is needed to protect it for future generations.”

Conservation advocates stress that once such woodlands are damaged, recovery can take decades. Residents are calling for urgent oversight and accountability, emphasizing that the preservation of protected sites is both a legal responsibility and a community duty.

The council has not yet issued a statement regarding the reported damage. Local community groups continue to monitor the site closely and are pressing for a clear response from elected representatives.
